A quick escape...Braga

Portugal gets lovelier with every visit...
Portugal es más bonito en cada visita...

A close escape to a different world...
Una escapada cerca a otro mundo...

Where the vowels are closed, and the s's are sharp...

And the buildings shine with colorful tiles, or wobble with years of debt...

Braga, a small city, celebrates a wealth of architechtural diversity in the Main plaza-cupulas, peaks, ans midieval towers.

And then there is the cafe...A Brasileira, a Portuguese classic, serving the famous strong portuguese coffee-although be warned in the winter Braga is virtually emply after 8 pm-enjoy a coffee in the morning or afternoon.

And after a coffee wander through a quirky Portuguese bookstore. Porto sets the standard, but Portuguese bookshops are meant to spend hours and hours in.

And admire the cute vintage Portuguese "sabonete"-they smell so nice too.
Y no pierdes el vintage "sabonete" portuguese-huele rico.

And even if it's only for a day and maybe finidng a restaurant is near impossible, an hour and half escape from home is well worth it.

Pueeeeente!

We have 5 days off this week starting Thursday for a local holiday in Santiago (Ascensión) and a Galician holiday to celebrate the language and literature (Letras Galegas). We're taking a much need roadtrip to the coast of Portugal to a surfer town with long sandy beaches called Santa Cruz. Now were just trying to decide if we should camp or hotel it...I'm voting for hotel-I'll save the camping for in Michigan this summer (by the way...we call the motor home!) I'm sooo excited for time to read and sun!
Also, design*sponge recently featured products that the moma store is featuring from Portugal...I'm hoping for a cute market and some lovely finds!

Porto

We went to Porto, Portugal with some friends for the weekend. The old zone of the city, with winding stairs and yellow corners leading to the river was spectacular. It's only 2 1/2 hours away and there is an IKEA on the way home...the perfect escape.
