On the list of things to do in Santiago this week...Curtocircuito: Short film festival. Hoping to catch a showing in the street and some Santiago(é)tapas...I'm determined to fill up a tapas passport this year!

A little bit of jazz...

Have you heard of or seen Chico and Rita? It's on my list of things to do. An animated film for adults about jazz, love, and revolution made by the impecable Spanish team: director Fernando Trueba-famous for Oscar winner Belle Epoch-also on my to see list, and designer Javier Mariscall-famous for the Barcelona Olympic's design. Add it to your list!

Film Fest

It's that time of year again...time for Cineuropa! So excited to get out of work at 8 a few nights a week so we can see a few of the films featured this year!

The Way

Hollywood has been in town to honor the Galician roots of Martin Sheen and his son Emilio Estevez. Their family (Martin's dad) is from a small town in Galicia. It's not the first time they've been in town, a year or so ago Mr.Sheen was in researching for the film, The Way, which they made about the Camino de Santiago and filmed on the pilgrimage. Last night they premiered the film in Santiago and tonight they are off the premiere in Madrid. The Camino looks incredibleand I love that they've filmed it to honor their family.

Almodovar on Broadway

I was watching the film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown on Version Española a Saturday night program that brings the directors and actors of a film to a roundtable discussion before and after the film (I love to hear their opinions and anecdotes). I've been getting hooked on the program, recently watching Los lunes al sol and El juego del ahorcado two films you should add to your to see list. As I was watching I was surprised to hear that Almodovar will be on Broadway! Nervous Breakdown has been transformed into a musical...seems perfect. What's your favorite Almodovar film?

Have you heard about Spain's nomination for best foreign language film for the Oscars? It looks promising this year. Staring Gael García Bernal and Luis Tosar-two fantastic actors, and directed by Icíar Bollaín, blurs the lines between the past and the present in Latin america. The film hasn't been released in Spain yet, but the story looks intriguing. Check out the trailer or read more about it here.

Famosos

hehe...remember my post on Bimba Bose? Well, the other night in Pontevedra we walked to one of our favorite places for drinks, by a cute plaza, and what do you know Bimba was Deejaying with David Delfin, yea the Spanish designer. The scene was lacking some dancing, so Melisa and I decided to go and dance a bit to the Michael Jackson, Beyonce, and Justin Timberlake...hahah. Funny thing is, as we got to the front, the DJs came down into the crowd to dance...and well, since everyone else did it, we got a pic with Bimba and David. What can I say? We are awesome!

Finally, another famous Galician actor, Luis Zahera, came around, so we got a pic...hahah, we were on a roll. He's the crazy dude in Celda 211 or better known as Petrolio his character in a Galcian TV series.

Goyas 2010

The Goya awards were on last night. Diego and I have a little tradition of watching movie awards shows, ever since our first semester together when I we "watched" the Oscar's red carpet together on the phone...hahah the things a boy will do to impress you. But last night we continued the tradition on our tiny couch and freezing house...and here's the update. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem appeared together in public for the first time in Spain. They tend to keep things really undercover since the Spanish gossip press is really terrible. Pedro Almodovar surprised the world and showed up on stage to give the best movie award. He isn't a member of the Spanish academy and never attends the Goyas but he really came out to support Spanish cinema this year and everyone went crazy. And the big winner of the night was a movie made with the help of the Xunta de Galicia-Celda 211. All the actors went home with a statue, as did the director, and they won best film. Being in Santiago the highlight of the was best actor winner Luis Tossar, main character in Celda 211, from Santiago, who finished his acceptance speech in Gallego-everyone is sooo proud! Parabens!

Cine

Santiago becomes mecca for all independant/international movie lovers in Galicia every November for the film festival, Cineuropa. We've been wanting to go for weeks, but with our new late work schedules we can never make it to any of the movies we want to see that are playing at 6, 8, or 10. This weekend we finally had the chance to make it out. We were between getting tickets to see Yann Tiersenn in concert or going to the movies...we ended up at the movie, getting last minute ticktets in the nosebleed section of the old theater in Santiago. hehe...Diego was double checking that I wanted to go, telling me we were going to be really high up...I didn't realize we would babsically be above the chandelier on benches leaning over the rails to see the movie! In any case we saw Looking for Eric directed by Ken Loach. It was an enjoyable film about a man overcoming difficult circumstances with the help of Eric Cantona retired a French soccer player. Definately worth seeing. And going to cineuropa was so nice. I wish we could take advantage of more of the fantastic films they are showing-and see some of the local Galician diretors' debuts. We always have next weekend too. Cineuropa lasts until December 2-if you're interested check out the website.

He loves and she loves

It's officially Semana Santa! Having spent my first Spanish Semana Santa (holy week) in Sevilla, the meca of all Semana Santa celebrations, the celebrations here in Santiago will be much less exciting, but I am looking forward to the down time to read, get plans done, and wish I had stuff to decorate my apt with, sigh, ;). Looking at design blogs there are so many cute little DIY things I could fill empty spaces with, but I have yet to find the Spanish equivalent to a Jo-Ann Fabrics or a Micheals. So, for now I'll just dream.

And while I'm relaxing this week, maybe I'll watch one of my all time favorite movies, Funny Face. When I went to Paris I couldn't help but hum "Bonjour Paris", and occasionally when walking down stairs I think, "take the picture, take the picture!", so you can only imagine that when thinking of weddings, this scene comes to mind...

Tennis, anyone?

It's a big day in the world of sports today. In the USA its the superbowl. In Spain, there will be coverage of the Superbowl, but today is more important for the historic tennis match this morning between classic rivals the Spanish tennis phenom Rafael Nadal and the swiss veteran Roger Federer. Did anyone in the states watch it? A five hour match, it was on TV all morning, and although I'm no pro tennis player I did get into the game and have quite the itch to get out and play tennis in a Lacoste polo. Nadal won the end of the match, and the classic rivals in the end shared kind words and tears. Nice guys. Tennis is so classy. Congrats Nadal!

Also, tonight another important entertainment event will be taking place, the Goya awards (Spain's version of the Oscars). It's cold and snowy in Madrid so the green carpet will be different than the red carpets I'm used to, but I'm looking forward to seeing the films and actors and the general scene that makes up the Spanish cinema. I've seen three of the films they have been talking about, Los girasoles ciegos, Solo quiero caminar, and Los crimenes de Oxford (Oxford crimes?? I can't remember what it's called in English). Hopefully one of them wins something! And maybe Javier and Penelope will show up too.

And the Oscar goes to...

Recently the international films that are up for nomination for an Oscar were revealed. Each country submits one film to the Academy, and from those films five are chosen as the best, and as we all know, one wins. This year Spain chose to submit a film based on the Spanish Civil War, Los Girasoles Ciegos (from a novel of the same name).
